Exterior

2024 BMW iX in Oxide Grey Metallic Color

The 2024 BMW iX comes equipped with an impressive array of standard exterior features, including 20-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting at the front and rear, power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals, a power liftgate, proximity keyless entry, and rain-sensing wipers. Its exterior design is both bold and sleek, featuring the iconic BMW double kidney grille and distinct, small, slit-like headlights. The front end includes gill-like active air flaps that efficiently direct cool air to the drive units and brake system when needed. The side profile boasts flush door handles and a prominent iX logo panel that splits the D pillar. At the rear, the taillights echo the slim design of the headlights, while the indentations at the bottom mimic the front air flaps. Unlike some sports SUVs, the iX embraces its identity without compromise.

Although the nose may be considered the least attractive aspect, choosing the non-M-Sport package version avoids the unappealing black trapezoids below the headlamps, which are part of an ineffective “aerodynamic pack.” Additionally, the large grille is protected by self-healing plastic, possibly indicating a defensive measure by BMW.

Interior

The iX’s interior goes beyond modern and enters the realm of futuristic as if it belongs to a vehicle from several years ahead.

The interior design of the iX is accompanied by a range of advanced technological features. The focal point is a large, curved touchscreen instrument panel, accompanied by a striking hexagonal-shaped steering wheel.

Interior of the 2024 BMW iX

As a unique option, BMW offers a spacious panoramic sunroof with electrochromic shading, a rare feature found in only a handful of vehicles.

The power front seats are heated and incorporate integrated speakers for an immersive stereo experience. While both faux-leather and genuine leather options are available for upholstery, BMW also provides a textile seat fabric called Loft, which utilizes microfiber cloth.

Both the front and back of the iX offer abundant space for passengers. As an electric vehicle, there is no need for a transmission tunnel, resulting in a flat floor that maximizes legroom for everyone, even when traveling with three passengers in the back.

The legroom provided is more than generous, and there is ample headroom as well. Even in models equipped with a panoramic sunroof, there is plenty of overhead space to accommodate passengers who are six feet tall.

Furthermore, the floor mats are crafted from recycled synthetic yarn derived from old fishing nets, and if you choose a leather interior, the upholstery is tanned using olive leaves, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. The wood accents are responsibly sourced, further enhancing the eco-friendly ethos.

The iX boasts a wide design, which translates to a spacious cabin in the back that comfortably accommodates three adults. Additionally, hidden Isofix points can be easily accessed if you are traveling with young children, ensuring their safety.

Conveniently placed USB-C ports located in the rear of the front seats allow for the charging of phones and tablets, ensuring that electronic devices remain powered throughout the journey.

For added convenience, BMW offers accessories like clip-in laptop trays and coat hangers, but it’s worth noting that these extras may be a bit cumbersome to use and lack the same level of attention to detail and style found throughout the rest of the car.

Technology

The prominent feature within your line of sight is the elegantly curved twin-screen displays known as BMW Live Cockpit Plus. The screen in front of you provides essential driving information such as speed and range, while the one to the left handles the infotainment system.

Originally launching with BMW’s iDrive 8 infotainment software, the iX has since received a complimentary over-the-air update to iDrive 8.5. This advanced software enables the customization of menus and graphics and includes a voice-activated assistant. The iX boasts a tech-forward dashboard design with a large 14.9-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 5G cellular connection.

Additionally, the iX comes equipped with an 18-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system, with the option to upgrade to a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setup.

While navigating through the menus may initially seem overwhelming, it’s worth exploring, as the system is not as difficult to use as it may appear. Instead of smudging the screen or relying on hit-or-miss voice controls, we recommend utilizing the iDrive rotary controller, which allows for easier and less distracting operation while driving, keeping your focus on the road.

Unlike many modern cars that bury air conditioning controls within touchscreen menus, BMW sensibly keeps the temperature controls readily visible at all times. However, adjusting the fan speed may require accessing a menu.

Cargo Space

With the rear seats in place, the iX provides a generous cargo space of 35.5 cubic feet. However, when the rear seats are folded down, the available space expands significantly to an expansive 77.9 cubic feet. This ample room allows for accommodating luggage, bicycles, and various other items. One slight drawback is that the iX lacks a front trunk, commonly known as a “frunk,” which is typically found in most electric vehicles and offers convenient storage for smaller items. On the bright side, a power liftgate comes as a standard feature, enhancing convenience when loading and unloading cargo.

The iX compensates with generously-sized door bins, a reasonably practical glovebox, and a couple of convenient cubbies to keep smaller items organized.

Performance

The iX is equipped with standard all-wheel drive, featuring a 190-kilowatt electric motor on the front axle and a more powerful 230-kW motor on the rear axle. The combined output reaches 516 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque, allowing the iX to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 4.4 seconds. The instant torque of the electric motors provides a seamless and powerful driving experience, whether it’s merging onto highways or simply starting from a standstill. The powertrain is well-rounded and instills confidence in the driver.

For most driving situations on public roads, the xDrive50 variant offers more than sufficient power. However, for those seeking even more performance or who have a penchant for high-powered vehicles, BMW introduced the iX M60 for the 2024 model year. This model boasts 610 horsepower and can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, making it a formidable competitor against vehicles like the Tesla Model Y Performance or Mustang Mach-E GT. The iX is equipped with a 111.5-kilowatt-hour battery, of which 105.2 kWh is usable.

During a test drive, starting with an 80% charge, the iX covered a distance of 209 miles before stopping for a recharge with 17% remaining. This exceeded the EPA’s range estimate by approximately 10 miles, which is impressive considering the test included spirited driving in sport mode on twisty mountain roads.

When it’s time to recharge, the iX can reach a maximum charging power of 195 kW at a compatible DC fast-charging station. While not as fast as some other models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Porsche Taycan, this rate allows for the addition of 90 miles of range in just a 10-minute charging session or a 10% to 80% state of charge in 40 minutes. BMW has partnered with EVgo, offering buyers and lessees $100 of charging credit at EVgo stations.

Charging the iX at home during off-peak evening hours proves to be the most cost-effective option. With a Level 2 charging plug, the iX can draw 11 kW, resulting in a full charge from empty in approximately 11 hours.

Pricing and Options

For the 2024 model year, the BMW iX introduces the high-performance M60 variant, which comes with a starting price of around $111,500. This model is equipped with an adaptive air suspension system that adjusts to enhance sporty driving dynamics. In addition, you can have options like the Luxury Package for an additional $1,150 and the Driving Assistance Professional Package for $2,300.

While the M60 offers impressive power and performance, it comes at a significant premium compared to the xDrive50 trim. Despite the M60’s ability to travel up to 296 miles on a single charge, we would still recommend the xDrive50, as it achieves a 307-mile range while starting at a more affordable price of $87,100. It comes with additional options like the Convenience and Premium Packages at $2,200 and $3,700, respectively.

With its range of powerful electric motor options and impressive acceleration, the BMW iX delivers a thrilling driving experience. While it may have minor drawbacks such as limited cargo space and the absence of a front trunk, the iX compensates for its luxurious features and comfortable ride. Overall, the BMW iX offers a glimpse into the future of electric mobility.
